What is happening…

Developer PFP Igloo have applied to develop the ‘Malmo Quay’ site which links the Quayside and Ouseburn.

Plans submitted to the council include an 18 storey tower block, which if allowed to happen will be the biggest building on the Quayside and will dominate the skyline of the whole area, including the iconic views of the river Tyne.

Why is this important…

This development threatens not only the impressive city vistas, including most notably the legendary view from the Free Trade Inn, but threatens the wonderfully special, but also fragile community into which the Ouseburn has evolved over the last 30 years.

This scheme offers no provision for affordable housing and is only viable to the developer by building the tower block.

The plans currently include an 18 storey tower block comprising of 62 dwellings, and a provision of only 18 parking spaces, which will only lead to worsening the already high pressure to on-street parking in the area, and result in dangerous conditions along the national cycle route on which the development will be built.

How You Can Help

The most effective way to influence planning application is with official objections on the application.

Now, we know that not everyone will be confident in making an objection on their own, so we’ve published a little guide on how to object which you can find by clicking the tab at he top of this page

For now though, we'd like to encourage anyone that feels comfortable already to make an objection to get straight on it. There's a link to the planning portal below or you can email the council with objections at malmo.quays@newcastle.gov.uk

What’s Next?

Over the coming days and week we aim to give everyone the tools they need to make their voice heard.

This includes helping with the wording and content of planning objections on the council planning portal, organising relevant petitions and even demonstrating in person.
